Positive synergistic effect of gaseous mixtures and its applications

The relation between the electrical breakdown properties of binary gaseous mixtures of SF/sub 6/ with CCl/sub 2/F/sub 2/ and ternary gaseous mixtures of SF/sub 6//N/sub 2/, SF/sub 6//CO/sub 2/ with CCl/sub 2/F/sub 2/ was studied experimentally under different uniformity of field, different pressures, and different partial pressure ratios. The electrical strengths of the binary gaseous mixture SF/sub 6//CCl/sub 2/F/sub 2/ with 10-30% CCl/sub 2/F/sub 2/ clearly show a positive synergistic effect. The results also indicate that the electrical strengths of ternary gaseous mixtures such as SF/sub 6//N/sub 2//CCl/sub 2/F/sub 2/ with optimal partial pressure ratio can be increased to or exceed that of SF/sub 6/, and its cost approaches the cost of the binary gaseous mixture SF/sub 6//N/sub 2/=50/50.<
