Internal spark gap protection of distribution transformers from low-side current surges

The emerging industry consensus on low-side surges to distribution transformers and a review of the benefits and detriments of available protection schemes led to the concept of an internally-mounted low-voltage spark gap as a protection device. Transformer tests and field trials of the prototype spark gap have demonstrated its effectiveness. Development of this device is continuing.<
