Right and left circular polarizing color filters made from crosslinkable cholesteric LC-silicones

Crosslinked cholesteric LC (liquid crystal) silicones are presented as promising materials for optical filters. Reflection wavelengths range from 380 nm to 2000 nm, i.e., the visible and near-infrared region of the spectrum. Right and left circular polarization is selectable using cholesterics with right- and left-handed helicity. Crosslinking has two advantages: the reflection wavelength of the cholesteric layer becomes nearly independent of temperature up to 140 degrees C; and the LC-silicone layer is a solid film. Crosslinked LC-films with different colors and helicities can be stacked to a free-standing film with the desired optical property. These advantages qualify LC-silicones for environments with high light flux and/or heat exposure.<
