Thermal implications of the new relaxed IEEE RF safety standard for head exposures to cellular telephones at 835 and 1900 MHz

The bioheat equation is used to solve for the temperature rise of the various tissues including the brain for three anatomical models with 1-mm resolution for exposure to cellular telephones at 835 and 1900 MHz for radiated power levels allowed under the previous and the newly relaxed IEEE RF Safety Standards and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) Standard. It is shown that the temperature increase for parts of brain in excess of 1.3 /spl deg/C will result for the radiated power levels allowed under the relaxed RF Safety Standard accepted by the IEEE. This temperature increase is up to 2.5/spl times/ and 7.0/spl times/ higher than that for the radiated powers allowed for the ICNIRP and the previous IEEE safety guidelines, respectively.
