ATM switching system architecture and implementation of B-ISDN

The author describes an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching system that used high-speed ICs to provide multimedia traffic control and media-specific service adaptation. The architecture for ATM switching, which is called multi-stage self-routing (MSSR), is based on the self-routing switching principle of K. Hajikano et al. (1988). It is constructed by connecting self-routing switching modules in a three-stage link configuration. This system is a first implementation of the broadband-integrated services digital network (B-ISDN).<
