One-phase to three-phase conversion utilizing forced phasing

Present single-phase to three-phase converters offer problems associated with harmonic content, high losses, multiple conversions, bulkiness, and cost. A converter has been designed to use a third of the number of devices used by a conventional converter with the aim of reducing size and cost. Tests have demonstrated that this converter gives a goodness factor of 70% in comparison with a conventional converter. The converter could be usefully applied in isolated areas where only one phase of the utility is available and the loads are three-phase, especially if bulkiness and cost are important factors.<
