An investigation of differential techniques in the compression of clinical computerised tomographic images

Differential techniques that reduces redundancy prior to efficient variable length encoding and the exploitation of statistical image characterisation, are clearly attractive. Both simple running and more complex predictive differentiation have found commercial use. This study assesses the relative merits of open loop differential techniques, including zero order and first order prediction, linear prediction minimising mean square error and linear adaptive prediction minimising mean square error.<
