Implementation of image pyramids for low bandwidth video transmission

A pyramidal video compression technique has been developed with a VLSI implementation in mind. This technique is computationally simple and makes use of the multi-resolution properties of pyramids that allows a moving image to be degraded 'gracefully' if a bandwidth limit is exceeded. An ASIC implementation is under investigation which would reduce the whole codec to a single chip plus standard memory.<
