A new threat to power systems security

This work discusses the occurrence of geomagnetic induced currents (GICs) in Southern America and its consequences. It shows that, although GICs have been believed to occur only at high latitudes, there are evidences of this phenomena in tropical regions-specially South America, deeply affected by the South Atlantic Geomagnetic Anomaly (SAGA). A case study linking geomagnetic anomalies and an (apparently) unexplainable sequence of events is presented and discussed.
