Fiber optic microcellular system composite triple beat reduction using the Golomb ruler

The in-band composite triple beat (CTB) generated by intensity modulating the laser diode can limit the performance of the fibre optic micro-cellular system, as they cannot be filtered off. This CTB maximises at the middle channels when the carriers are equally spaced. However, it can be reduced by rearranging the way the channels are employed. One of which is to deploy the Golomb ruler, which causes the spacing to differ between subsequent carriers. The CTB generated by intensity modulating the laser with 14 channels or carriers placed corresponding to the Golomb ruler's marks is simulated using a distributed feedback laser that is modelled using Volterra series and compared to that obtained when placing the carriers in an equal-distant manner. The CTB produced at the designated or specified channels used are quantified and the quality of the placing is looked into.
