'Wireless Bimboards'-the use of programmable gate arrays in a logic design laboratory

The results of converting a digital electronic laboratory using 74 chips wired on IC layout boards, to Xilinx(R) logic cell array (LCA) programmable gate arrays, are described. The LCAs expose students to modern ASIC implementation methods and consume less student time for wiring and noneducational debugging. However, to realize these benefits, one should be prepared for significant start-up costs and several man months of preparatory work.<
