Characterization of rural traffic and evaluation of cellular protocols for fixed-mobile rural application

This paper investigates a method for estimation and characterization of traffic in cellular communication networks. The traffic estimation is based on the geographic traffic model, which obeys the geographical and demographical factors for the demand of cellular services. For traffic characterization, a technique that uses discrete demand nodes is employed. The technique on how geographical information systems can be used to estimate the traffic demand during the early phases of the process of cellular network planning is investigated. We also consider a CDMA based fixed cellular solution where the cell coverage has an inverse relationship with user capacity within the cell. The analysis of capacity and coverage in a; cell are crucial issues that can be used in cellular network planning to set limits on traffic within the cell in order to meet the coverage requirements. The use of coverage-capacity trade-off and how this can be useful to the algorithmic approach to demand oriented cellular network planning is presented.
