Microcellular radio modelling

First generation cellular radio systems are now failing to support the increased demand from all sectors of the public. The problem of congestion is at its most severe in dense urban areas such as city centres, and on some motorways. A promising idea that has the potential to provide a solution is the microcellular approach. The authors describe the development of a microcellular propagation model. Narrowband and wideband measurements have been made in the University of Liverpool precinct. The results were compared to the results obtained from the model. The narrowband characteristics of the microcellular environment can be modelled by 4 or more rays with an appropriate enhancement. However, modelling of the wideband characteristics requires the consideration of more than 4 rays. It is concluded that a 10 ray model is capable of modelling the microcellular environment accurately.<
