Performance analysis of 1XEV-DO systems under realistic traffic models and limited-size IP backhaul

Detailed simulation model and analysis of the 1XEV-DO system were described with special emphasis on the impact on the realistic traffic models from the limited IP backhaul link speed between a base station controller (BSC) and a base transceiver station (BTS). The realistic traffic models are defined by the 3GPP2 (3rd Generation Partnership Project 2) and realistic UDP, TCP and IP models. Our simulation results show that at the infinite backhaul link speed (no constraint on the backhaul), the air-interface throughput is lower than the unrealistic "greedy user model" presented in A. Jalali et al. (May 2000) due to a realistic traffic model. With this realistic traffic profile, the performance projection should focus on the end-to-end application throughputs and packet delays in the backhaul, especially with the limited backhaul speed. We show simulation results for varying number of mobiles in 3-sector 1-carrier sites.
