Credit management and source quenching for the subscriber network interface of switched multi-megabits data services

The best arrangement of source quenching (SQ) and credit management (CM) at the subscriber network interface (SNI) is investigated using simulation. Source quenching is intended to allow the packet loss to occur at the source rather than inside the network and to reduce the number of retransmissions. Potential implementations of credit management and source quenching are presented. In addition to shifting the packet loss from core network access (CNA) to terminal network access (TNA), source quenching also shortens the delay across SNI at high network loads. The optimum configuration of SQ and CM is CM-SQ, which provides the load balance on the CPUs of TNA and CNA and shortens the delay across SNI according to queuing theory.<
