Strategy for reducing the out-of-plane radiation loss in photonic crystal waveguides on high-index substrates

Two-dimensional photonic crystal linear defect waveguides on semiconductor substrates are studied numerically. We predict that the vertical radiation loss can be reduced by using asymmetric photonic crystal claddings.
