Saccharide fuel cells with platinum particles anode

We report measurements performed in a membraneless alkaline fuel cell, developed by the Fuel Cell Research Laboratory of the Hong Kong University, using glucose as fuel and KOH as electrolyte. The anode incorporated platinum particles and is operated at room temperature. Measurements were done at different concentrations of glucose. Open circuit voltage, polarization curves and power density as function of current density of the fuel cell are reported. The maximum power density reached was 0.61 mW/cm/sup 2/ when the current density was 2.13 mA/cm/sup 2/ and the measured open circuit voltage was 0.771 V. These results were obtained with initial concentrations of 0.87 M for KOH and 0.89 M glucose.
