Fuzzy logic modeling of a grid-connected wind/photovoltaic system with battery storage

Intelligent techniques, such as fuzzy logic methods, have been successfully applied to the dynamic control of renewable energy systems. This research develops component models, based on fuzzy logic principles, of a grid-connected renewable energy system consisting of wind turbines, photovoltaics, and battery storage. The models are evaluated for accuracy using several tests that compare the model output versus actual system output over a wide range of operating conditions. The models were then integrated with each other to evaluate whole system performance. The results show that there are distinct advantages to using fuzzy models, namely that reasonable predictions of component behavior can be very quickly obtained from minimal data, but accuracy is limited by the experts' knowledge.
