Applying commercial robotic technology to radioactive material processing

Although commercial robotic systems with the required capabilities are available, they are not readily adaptable to automated nuclear material processing in a glove box environment. Adaptation of a commercial robot meeting the size constraints and load-carrying parameters is the shortest and least expensive path. It has been easier to work from an existing design meeting most of the design requirements than develop an original robot design. The automation of repetitive manual glove box operations is achievable, and should be reached by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory program in progress. The capability to perform the required functions has been demonstrated. Experience with similar systems, and at other Department of Energy laboratories, shows that the environment, safety, and regulatory concerns can also be met with such equipment.<
