An evolutionary approach to the design of a metropolitan area network to support B-ISDN applications

High-level technical information on issues concerning the evolutionary design of a metropolitan area network (MAN) is provided to support broadband integrated services digital network (BISDN). The focus is on methods of providing more aggregate bandwidth than the emerging IEEE Std. 802.6 for the distributed queueing dual bus (DQDB). The limited bandwidth problem associated with the DQDB proposal is solved by using a multihop multiconnected ring architecture with a cross point matrix. The interconnection graph can take any form to provide the concurrency needed.<
