Calculation of voltage surges on motors fed from PWM drives - a simplified approach

Motors operating on pulse width modulated (PWM) inverters are subjected to significant overvoltage stresses that may cause early failure. This letter derives an expression for the overvoltage magnitude. The results agree well with published data.
