Ultra-high-Q microcavities from nonlinear optics to cavity QED

A new chip-based microcavity capable of Q factors in excess of 500 million is reviewed. Applications of these structures are examined including demonstrations of fiber-coupled Raman oscillators having micro Watt level threshold powers.
