SAR calculations in an anatomically realistic model of the head of cellular phone users

This paper presents a thorough investigation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) calculation in a realistic 3D model of the human head exposed to electromagnetic fields generated by cellular phones. The new human head model has a millimetric precision of /spl Delta/x=1.11 mm, /spl Delta/y=1.86 mm and /spl Delta/z=1.11 mm; and is composed of 12 different tissues. The antenna of the cellular phone was considered radiating a power of 600 mW at 900 MHz. The results show that in some parts of the head, particularly in the ear, the averaged peak values of SAR exceeded prescribed safety guidelines, i.e. the values of 1.6 W/kg and 2 W/kg over 1 g and 10 g of tissue, respectively. This indicates the need for further investigation, particularly the possibility of temperature rises in the human head.
