Scalable QoS support mobile resource reservation protocol for real-time wireless Internet traffic

Advances in wireless broadband communications have continued steadily over the last few years on the basis of wireless LAN and next generation (3G) mobile communication technology deployment. Both cellular operators and ISP, together with the relevant standardization bodies, are eagerly looking at the possibility of employing IP and its mobility extensions within their wireless networks. Mobile IPv6 is the most promising technology for developing such an all-IP based mobile network. But, there are still several performance defects in this protocol for supporting QoS of real-time wireless applications because of the lack of route optimization and handoff capability. Therefore, an innovative QoS support mobile resource reservation protocol (Mobile-RSVP) is proposed in this paper. We introduce a new concept of mobile QoS path. A mobile QoS path is established for a mobile session that is identified by a home IP address in addition to conventional RSVP session keys, such as destination IP address, IP protocol identifier and destination port. And we also define a new RSVP reservation-style named shared destination filter (SDF) style. The SDF style reservation request creates a single reservation shared by selected downstream receivers (destination addresses). Therefore, a mobile-RSVP can creates a flexible mobile routing path that can adapt its routing topology dynamically according to mobile node's movement. As a result, a fast and smooth handoff can be achieved, while guaranteeing the QoS of real-time traffic. This method also optimizes the routing path between a corresponding node and a mobile node by checking the home address' binding cache entry prior to data transmission using RSVP messages. Thus, prior bandwidth reservations along the optimal routing path can be achieved. Our proposed schemes are scalable and can be applied to future large-scale mobile IP networks.
