Novel properties of photonic-band-gap waveguides

Summary form only given. Photonic-band-gap (PBG) waveguides that consist of line defects in photonic crystals having waveguiding modes within the PBG are receiving much attention. Here we report experimental investigations for transmission characteristics of various types of PBG waveguides in 2D photonic crystal slabs. Our results show their unique cutoff property and extremely large group-velocity dispersion. Our PBG waveguides are width-varied single-missing-holeline defects and phase-shifted-hole line defects in 2D Si photonic crystal slabs fabricated from SOI (silicon-on-insulator) substrates using e-beam lithography and ECR dry etching.
