Stroboscopic observation of high speed VBL motion using an optical sampling system

A pulsed flowing N/sub 2/ laser pumping a rhodamine 6G recirculating dye laser has been used to observe repetitive vertical Bloch line (VBL) motion stroboscopically at speeds in excess of 40 m/s. VBL displacement during the drive pulse is seen to be highly linear and no indication of overshoot has been found. Velocity breakdown at high drive fields has been observed and a model to explain this is presented. Observation is made of the VBL instantaneous position during high-speed motion to find how the velocity varies with the driving forces acting on the VBL.<
