Ku-band and S-band observations of the differential propagation constant in snow

Observations of the differential propagation constant in snow are reported. These observations, made with circularly-polarized radars, indicate that the principal effect of anisotropy is to produce a differential phase shift. A value of
0.36\deg
per kilometer has been obtained for propagation through snow at a wavelength of 10.4 cm; at 1.8 cm values ranging from
0.16\deg
to
1.17\deg
per kilometer were observed in moderate to heavy snow.
