Feasibility Investigation and Performance Evaluation of New Axial-Radial Hybrid Excitation Motor in Flux Regulation and Dual Three-phase Operation

This paper conducts an analysis and evaluation of the performance of a novel hybrid magnetic circuit permanent magnet synchronous motor (HMPMSM) for electric vehicles (EVs). The crucial characteristic of this motor lies in the attainment of a parallel magnetic circuit through the multi-stator structure. The three-phase symmetrical windings on different stators correspond to distinct branches of the hybrid magnetic circuit, capable of outputting torque or conducting flux regulation. Owing to the coupling relationship among the branches of the parallel magnetic circuit, the adjustment of one branch enables the motor to obtain the operating state with different magnetic field distributions. Additionally, the multi-stator hybrid magnetic circuit provides a new idea for the multi-phase operation. Two sets of independent three-phase symmetrical windings can conveniently achieve dual three-phase operation, and fault tolerance and reliability can be enhanced. The topology and principle of the motor are introduced, and its performance is compared with that of the traditional interior permanent magnet synchronous motor under several typical control methods. Furthermore, the effect of the multi-stator setting on the electromagnetic vibration of the motor is also analyzed and compared. Finally, the conclusions derived through analysis and comparison are verified by prototype experiments.
