Effects of elastic inhomogeneity on the intrinsic birefringence in a stress-induced birefringent optical fiber: a simple theory

A simple approximate theory is developed to describe the effects of the elastic properties of a stress-induced birefringent optical fiber on the intrinsic birefringence in the fiber. It is found that the birefringence increases nonlinearly with the Young's modulus and the Poisson's ratio of the stress-applying regions in the fiber. The results obtained from the theory agree well with those obtained from a fully numerical analysis.<
