DEMO: Non-Reciprocal RIS Solution for Power Mismatch in WiFi-Connected IoT Devices

Ensuring effective communication between Access Points (APs) and client devices is crucial in WiFi networks, especially for IoT devices with stringent power constraints. The disparity in transmitted power between APs and battery-dependent client devices often results in the “near-far” problem, where the AP’s higher transmission power leads to asymmetrical communication challenges. This paper presents a demonstration the impact of mismatched AP-client power levels on network performance, coverage, and efficiency. To address these challenges, we propose the implementation of LATYS FOCUS, a non-reciprocal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS). LATYS FOCUS dynamically adjusts signal characteristics to amplify the client’s signal towards the AP, effectively mitigating the near-far effect. This intelligent manipulation of signal propagation ensures balanced communication links, optimizing network performance and enhancing user experience. Our study highlights the practical applications of RIS in resolving power mismatches in WiFi networks, demonstrating its potential to maintain reliable and efficient network operations.
