Alignment-tolerant optical-fiber tips for laser transmitters

A procedure is given for designing the tip of a single-mode fiber so that the coupling efficiency with a single-mode semiconductor laser is as large as possible under the constraint that the tolerance for offset misalignment has any prescribed value.
