Eigenproblems of radially inhomogeneous optical fibers from the scalar formulation

A unified method based on finite difference is proposed to find cutoff frequencies and propagation constants of optical fibers with arbitrary refractive-index profiles in the scalar form. This method is shown to be efficient in terms of accuracy and computation cost.
