Broadcast signals are intended to cover a wide area. In fact, the word “broadcast” originated in the 18th century: a farmer three hundred years ago would take a handful of seeds from an over-the-shoulder bag and cast them broadly around the field, hence “broad casting.” When radio was developed early in the 20th century, the term was used to describe how the new technology spread a signal from a transmitting antenna.
