Book Reviews: “Empire of the Air – The Men Who Made Radio”

This Quarter's Book Review is written by Dan Hoolihan. One of the topics that always seems to pique the interest of EMC engineers is the history of both the development of and application of electromagnetics. Examples are a previous review of the book titled, “Faraday, Maxwell, and the Electromagnetic Field” and the recent Keynote Address at the Phoenix symposium on the history of the Atlantic Telegraph. This review is another in that series and I think you will find it fascinating. It is about Lee de Forest, Edwin Howard Armstrong, and David Sarnoff, the individuals who developed the technology of radio and the major company that popularized radio to the masses. It is also the first time that review is being presented as a two-part series. I am certain that after reading the first part, you will find yourself looking in your mail for the second part in the 3rd Quarter Magazine (or perhaps buying the book if you cannot wait).
