A man-portable X-band terminal system

The authors outline a concept for a man-portable X-band terminal system that would operate via DSCS (Defense Satellite Communication System) III and other nonprocessing SHF (super high-frequency) satellites. The system data rate and capacity are analyzed, and a design concept that will support 75-2400-b/s data and 2400-b/s digital voice communications is discussed. A demand-assigned multiple-access (DAMA) protocol that will permit 100 or more users to operate in an efficient manner with a minimum of traffic delay is examined. A portable terminal using a small parabolic antenna and weighing less than 25 lb is proposed. Application of the latest technology toward realization of a lightweight unit is discussed, and weight and power budgets are presented for the design.<
