S parameter analysis of split ring resonator for various substrate materials

The Split Ring Resonators are increasingly being proposed for many microwave applications. The design of this resonator is based on resonant frequency for both civilian and military applications. The split ring resonators are being used for the construction of sensors for various applications including dielectric characterization of materials and biosensing. To increase the sensitivity of the resonator, the insertion loss of the resonator should be reduced. To account for the insertion loss, the scattering parameters (S parameters) S

are plotted and analyzed. In this paper, a split ring resonator on a dielectric substrate coupled to a microstrip line is analyzed for various substrate materials and it is found that the material RogersTMM13i exhibiting low insertion loss is the ideal substrate material for high sensitivity applications. The split ring resonator is simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics.
