A modular intersection controller with adaptive stage selection and duration algorithms

Much research attention has focussed on improving strategies for traffic light control to address the problem of increasing congestion in road networks. Here we present a modular decentralized traffic light controller, and propose several algorithms which harness the potential of V2I communication in order to increase the flow of vehicles in the network and reduce travel time. We compare the performance of these algorithms with those already found in the literature, as well as exploring the impact of network topology on the performance of the controller, finding how different controllers operate when used on different types of road networks.
