Effects of demand side management & storage on renewable energy penetration to the grid

Recent developments in power electronic technology and government policies, lead to substantial increase in renewable penetration into the grid, especially from solar. Utility company usually incentivizes renewable energy schemes through Feed in Tariff or Net Metering mechanisms. This article presents a study on variation in renewable energy penetrated into distribution system under Net Metering mechanism and Feed in Tariff. The solar PV owner may try to increase the earnings from renewable energy installation and thereby reduce the pay-back time, with the help of demand side management (DSM) techniques and storage. Hence the energy penetrated in to the grid depends not only on the amount of generation, but also DSM and storage. The study is supported with a case study conducted for distribution feeder system with solar PV installation under different scenarios and results validate the requirement of such study. Also, the amount of penetrated power in percentage is tabulated which shows certain scenarios are worth to implement since it benefits both the utility and the micro grid.
