Design of a low permanent magnet mass hybrid excited flux switching machine for a PHEV application

This paper presents an optimized design of a Hybrid-Excited Flux-Switching machine (HEFSM) with a very low quantity of permanent magnet (PM) for a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) traction application. The design examined is the result of an evolutionary optimization algorithm. The adopted solution needs only 650g of PMs to reach a maximum power of 80kW over a wide speed range (2,600 to 12,000rpm) and a peak torque of 233Nm at 2,605rpm. The contribution of the field excitation coils is appraised, particularly on the back-emf, the mean torque and the core loss levels. The global performances of the machine are presented through efficiency and losses maps and the contribution of the PMs is also discussed.
