Design of a tunable ring resonator with enhanced quality factor

A two dimensional structure consisting of a straight waveguide and a ring resonator is presented here. Both the ring and straight waveguide consist of two parts: core and cladding. Herein, a microring resonator based notch filter was simulated. By varying the core width of the ring resonator it was made tunable and thus the notch frequency of the filter was controlled. Material to build the ring resonator was selected as Quartz and AgGaS₂. An improvement in the quality factor was observed for the frequencies in the infrared and visible range. Variation of the parameters provided achievement of a quality factor of maximum 1325.224 and also its notch frequency was made tunable for a range of 0.0194 micrometre. The response of the ring resonator due to parameter variation was clearly marked during the simulation. This gives a good idea of the sensitivity of the device. Simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics was employed for this purpose.
