Towards a massively distributed IaaS operating system: Composition and evaluation of OpenStack

Today, the dominant deployment model of cloud infrastructures consists in having few large datacenters (DCs) from where cloud services are delivered for different needs (service platforms, cloud services for external customers, information system applications, etc.). This model is being challenged today by new emerging needs (IoT applications, NFV services, Mobile edge computing, etc.) requiring the on-demand deployment of infrastructure services (IaaS) that are distributed within the backbone network, typically, in Point-of-Presence (PoP) locations (in addition to those in large DCs). Among the challenges raised by this new trend, is the question of the control architecture and the associated software solutions that will manage the Distributed Cloud Infrastructure (DCI). In this paper we present the first steps towards an OpenStack-based reference architecture for the management of a massively DCI. We present multiple challenges that are addressed by our system and provide results of different test cases that will help defining and comparing software architecture choices to control a massively DCI in a Telco context.
