Analysis of high-resolution electric vehicle charging on time-of-use grid demands

This paper serves to provide factual data to help characterize the localized impacts of electric vehicles. Charging profiles are first studied in high, one-minute data resolution in terms of both power demand and power factor to view the characteristic signature effects of EV charging. How EVs affect localized household power demands and the need for smart-charging methodologies will be discussed. Lastly, total energy usage and maximum power delivered are broken out according to the local utility's time-of-use periods. Results show that subscribers may shift their EV charging profiles to mid or off-peak timeframes, if incentivized to do so.
