Exergy Analysis of a 210 MW Unit at 1260 MW Thermal Plant in India

Energy analysis of any system must be made through the energy quantity as well as the quality. The general energy analysis evaluates the energy on its quantity only. However, the exergy analysis assesses the energy on quantity as well as on quality. This paper presents the exergy analysis of 210 MW unit of Guru Go bind Singh Super Thermal Plant (GGSSTP) located in India. It houses six 210 MW units. The energy and exergy at various points in the unit's cycle have been calculated using mass, energy and exergy balance equations. The first law efficiency and second law efficiency have been assessed for major components such as steam generator, turbines and condenser. Also, the exergy destruction in various devices and the exergy destruction percentage with respect to the total exergy generated in steam generator have been determined. A comparison has been done between the energy losses and the energy losses percentage with respect to the total energy released in steam generator. The analysis of the data so produced reveals that the major energy losses occur at the condenser whereas the major exergy losses occur in steam generator.
