Experimental study on anesthetic effects of eugenol on carassius auratus

Screening out an effective, safe and environmental anesthetic on fish was the intention of this study. At the temperature of 15~25°C, the anesthesia time, the recovery time, the bounce time and the number of gills movements were studied at different concentrations of eugenol (FA-100) on carassius auratus. The results showed that, the anesthesia time shortened with the concentration increasing from 60~480 mg·L
^-1
, while the recovery time and bounce time got raised, but the number of the gills movement were decreased (P<;0.05). The recovery rate was 100%, and the survival rate was 100% after 7 days when the concentration was from 60~480 mg·L
^-1
, however, the recovery rate was 60% after 7 days when the concentration was 960 mg·L
^-1
. The results indicated that eugenol had an effective anesthetic effect on carassius auratus, and the safest concentration was 60~480 mg·L
^-1
. It can be concluded that FA-100 was an appropriate aquatic anesthetic.
