Summary: This paper states and defends two propositions: 1) An acoustical scientist can diagnose an auditorium better by listening than by electronic measurement; 2) An acoustical scientist can evaluate a concert hall by listening to commercial phonograph recordings made therein. The apologetics are based on personal experiences in several Colorado Auditoriums and listening to Telarc digitally mastered recordings made in five different auditoriums. The second proposition can be tested by the reader.
