Summary:The pulp and paper industry offers a wide spectrum of research challenges to the control systems community. Implementations of control technology, production planning, scheduling, and operations can lead to tangible improvements in terms of increased capital returns and reduced environmental impact. This paper presents an overview of operations in an integrated pulp and paper mill and reviews the control challenges for important process units. It also summarizes current and future research areas in the pulp and paper industry
